Discover the intriguing world of botanical folklore with our Poisonous Plant Pocket Guide Workshop—an embroidery experience that delves into the magical and enigmatic nature of mistletoe, an iconic yet dangerous symbol of holiday cheer.

Did you know that mistletoe, along with other plants associated with the holidays like holly and poinsettia, harbors a hidden poisonous side beneath its festive allure? This workshop celebrates these paradoxes, weaving mystery and beauty together.

Led by artist, educator, and writer Sarah Zanchetta, renowned for her textile artistry and dedication to reconnecting with nature through hands-on mending and the exploration of toxic plants, you’ll uncover the myths, folklore, and scientific insights surrounding mistletoe—a plant that embodies both the joy and the intrigue of holiday traditions.

Over the course of this two-and-a-half-hour session, you’ll learn four beginner-friendly stitches—running, chain, satin, and French knot—that will guide you in crafting your own embroidered mistletoe masterpiece, adding an enchanting touch to your home. Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or a complete beginner, this workshop beckons you into the mysterious charm of the season.

All materials are provided, including an embroidery hoop and thread, so you can take your project home and continue exploring the art of stitchery. Step into a creative space where holiday magic and the captivating mystery of poisonous plants come together.

Instructor

Sarah Zanchetta (she/they) is an artist, educator, and writer whose textile practice dives into her loss of connection to nature through hands-on mending and research of poisonous plants. She questions what it means to be in kinship with the poisonous, creating intimate works as a space to unfold curiosities, care, and anxieties about what grows beneath our feet.

Zanchetta is a graduate of the Master of Visual Studies Studio program at the University of Toronto and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University. Her practice has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council, and has collaborative community-based work in the permanent collections of the Kortright Centre for Conservation and Evergreen Brick Works. Their work has been shown internationally, with most recent exhibitions at Fais-Moi L'Art (Montreal, Canada) and Art Museum (Toronto, Canada).
